ICELANDIC MYSTIC CREATURES
Many say that the strange Icelandic mystic creatures existed because they were the only "logical"explanation of the events of the past. When the person could not explain the remarkable natural phenonemon, the mind wondered and through imagination, speculation and sometimes deception created these creatures. Not only in Iceland but in a variety of cultures around the world. With the development of technology and modern science, scientists have proved that some of the American creatures like vampires and werewolfs could be alive. Or at least it is scientifically possible. These creatures were often featured in stories for children which were used to scare them and teach them what could be done and what could not. The story of Lagarfljót worm is an example of a story for children which was created to teach them to store their things and watch out for them. When Lagarfljót worm wasn't just a story anymore it was used to scare children and watch out for them and that they didn't go down to the river and had the chance to drown.
What are mystic creatures?
Mystic creatures are creatures that first appeared in the folklore and mythology. Iceland has many and diverse creatures that first appeared in the 13-17 century. Most of the creatures have supernatural powers such as Nykur that can go in the likeness of other animals and bear king has horns on his head and a golden stone. The gold stone guided the bear kings way and he often helped humans and animals by lighting the way. Some of these forces are good and others evil. It characterizes the strange creatures that they are always good or bad. They are almost never neutral and want to do the man either good or evil. Forces of some animals have no proper explanation, neither scientifically nor tangible. More often than not they resemble living creatures, supernatural things, like angels. Often they come before big news or grief, the most famous example of Icelandic creatures is Lagarfljótsormurinn, he was often seen before big news and he was seen before the small pox outbrake in 1707, in many cases the creatures are a symbol of the good or evil. Take Nykur for example, he was often called the Devil in a horse corpse and people feared to go near the shore, because that is where the Nykur lived. Bear King is another example of this, but it is a symbol for the good and righteous. He led the men out of snowstorms and punished animals and humans for what they did wrong. Most of these creatures are a combination of animals or a better version of an animal. Nykur is a horse with superpowers and can change his appearance, Bear King is a polar bear that is made better with the horn and the gold stone that guides the humans way and Múshveli which is a combination of a mouse and a whale.

Some of these creatures might exist and many people who believe in them, have found the remains and other evidence of the existence of the creatures. Some of them have not been seen for a long time but creatures like the Lagarfljót worm are seen even today. Although the authenticity is often debated about, they have been a major issue in our society. They have helped parents to discipline their children, form a cultural benchmark and enriched the imagination of children and adults. It's irrelevant whether they exist or not, and the point is that they are in the minds of people all over the world. Iceland is an island that is surrounded by sea and full of lakes and rivers, fishing has always been an important aspect of daily life. It is probably the reason why more than half of all Icelandic mystic creatures are found in the sea and lakes and most of them can live in water. Although we only name 10 main mystic creatures, there are far more and the list is almost infinite. Our ancestors believed that all these strange creatures belonged in reality and the belief was based on their own experiences and experiences of their ancestors. Icelandic mystic creatures are very important for our culture and it would be a great shame if they would get lost in science. If mystic creatures would get lost, a notable factor in the existence of Icelanders will get lostand a part of our culture would disappear. Little reliable sources are available about this creatures since no onw knows if they exist or not and no one can say for certain wether they exist or not.
