SURVEY
What of these Icelandic mystic creatures do you know?
We explored common knowledge on 1144 people and put it in these poles. We found out that about 50% of the participants do not believe in mystic creatures and only 18% believe in them. Also, we found it remarkable that most of those who have been to the monster musieum in Bíldudalur believe that these creatures exist. We also found that most people who were younger than eighteen years old usually only know the Lagarfljót worm but not other common creatures such as Nykur, Fjörulalla and Sæneyti. People who were older than eighteen rather believed in the animals and knew far more creatures than those who are younger. To summarize the results of this study, we found that those who are older rather believe in these creatures and know more creatures than those who are younger than eighteen. This means that it is happening what many scientists fear. That people are losing faith in this cultural heritage and that young people will not receive adequate training and do not know our folklore. It means that we are losing a fraction of our culture, just as we have to look after the language, we must protect our folklore. People don't need to believe in the creatures, but they have to know the stories and preserve them.
