SKATEMOTHER
The Skate Mother is first mentioned in the 17th century and was by far the best known and the scariest creature but in the 20th century reduced the effectiveness of it. She is mentioned in 1638,in the work Wonders of Iceland by Gisli Oddsson. Since it is said to live in the river along with two other creatures, Seal mother and Lagarfljóts worm. The skatemother has also other names as: Flux Monster, skate, waterdevil and Water Spirit.
Skate mother is not really the protector of the skates, as men thought, but resembles it if you look quickly, as seen from above. In the center of the skatemother there's a tail, which is similar skatetail. What men thought were eight tails are really very long and narrow toes. The forelimbs look like bat wings.
It is not known how the skatemother gets food in freshwater but in the sea, she eats most of the skates and other flatfish. She swims just above the bottom of the sea, scratching him with its claws so the fish that lies gets up and the skatemother eats it. Some sources say that if the skatemother sees many skates to be drawn up on a ship, she grabs the ship on both sides and drowns it. Skate mother lives where the skates are the most. But why is the skatemother in rivers, ponds and lakes? It is not easy to answer, but the solution may consist in the fact that in Miðvatni in Borgarhafnarheiði in East Skaftafellssýsla is a threetailed skate, in Þingvellir there is a one seventailed skate and one in the West Fjords with nine tails, like the one in Lagarfljóti. Maybe the mother has to get fully grown before he is ready to drown boats and ships.
,, Skatemother. She is the greatest destroyer and very large. Now is the belief that the skates are in many rivers, but that would be the skatemothers. Everybody recognize the skate in Þverá in Rangárvallasýsla, but she was first a zombie. Jón Hallsson poet had catched a hard and dry skate and dumped her in the river to protect Fljótshlíð. This went well for a long time, but then people began to notice that there were many skates in the river. She probably invited all of her sisters from the sea. Then the men were very careful and on guard if they might see some skatemothers in Þverá. In the year 1797 saw Sveinn Pálsson some monsters in the lake, three or four together. So it was in the summer of 1797 to Sveinn Palsson physician and naturalist saw any The Monster in the river, three or four together."
